Polaris AB: The Fable Collection of Short Stories
A man drew out of his bank, a whole months salary and after purchasing a ticket, got onto a crowded train on it's way into the city. A thief had been watching the man withdrawing the large sum of money and hurried onto the train after him.
At an opportune moment, the thief slipped his hand into the man's jacket and lifted out his wallet.
The ticket inspector arrived to check the tickets. The man reached into his pocket only to find his wallet gone. He became red faced and could hardly speak in disbelief.
"I haven't got the ticket and my money is all gone" - he stuttered in shock.
"Shame on you trying to get a free ride" - said the ticket inspector - "You will be handed over to the guard at the next stop". The other passengers scowled and glared at the man as he took the full impact of their anger and disgust directed towards him.
The thief felt generous after obtaining such a large sum leant forward to the inspector and said loudly - "I would feel bad seeing this man get into trouble. My wife is ill and was unable to travel with me today so I would like to offer her ticket to this man to take care of his ticket fee".
He then handed over the man's stolen ticket to the inspector.
"That's so very kind of you" - said the embarrassed man. I am so grateful to you, bless you and may the Lord smile upon you". The other passengers all nodded their approval to the generous stranger and praised his good morals, as he sat back smiling and feeling very pleased with himself.
There are now so many people in society who steal bread from others only to give out crumbs in return.
They then receive grateful thanks and appreciation for the crumbs.
And the Moral of the Story is : Beware of those who seek praise from so little effort. There is no honour earned from deceitful actions.
