Sveti Stefan / Budva, Montenegro

This 'island on a stick' is called a tombolo and was until recently an elite luxury hotel under the name of Aman Sveti Stefan.  

An ancient tribe called Pastrovici used this island in the past as it offered near perfect defence, which carried on a long tradition until in 15th Century, it was heavily fortified in stone for defence from all enemies, with numerous cannons and cannon openings and cannons remaining as a memory and reminder of the past times. The interior of the town is made of curvy, narrow streets with join together in  picturesque squares, with three churches and each of the elegant houses decorated in typical Mediterranean style, being used as luxury individual hotel suites. The entire island was closed in 2020 during the Covid Period.

​Sveti Stefan is a summer resort for high end tourists. At the end of the 1940’s, a decision was made to turn over the island to become a tourist facility with many of the former occupants becoming relocated to other areas. It was visited by famous and the infamous alike such as actors like Sofia Loren and Carlo Bruni, as well as the Presidents of the majority of countries of the world, singers, scientists and many others. English Princess Margaret stayed as well as Italian King Umberto II of Savoy, famous world actors like: Kirk Douglas, Doris Day, Geraldine Chaplin, Sidney Poitier, Richard Widmark, Sylvester Stallone, Jeremy Irons… Famous literates Andre Marlow and Alberto Moravia, also Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin, famous chess master Robert Fisher, as well as the glamorous, Claudia Shifer.
