For six days and nights, the citizens of Rome watched a great fire burn through their city until over 70% of the buildings, temples and public works had been destroyed.
Half the city were now homeless, in desperation, anger and seeking the cause of the fire, they sought to find someone to blame. Their focus fell immediately upon their leader and Emperor, Nero. It was July 18 - 64 AD
It was already known that Nero was planning some major changes, his vast and grandiose plans to level the old Roman Republic and raise a new city from the rubble were well known, he had even planned a name for it - Neropolis, after himself.
Rumours began spreading that Nero himself had ordered the fire to use it as an excuse for his proposed plans to construct his new city. It was said that during the fire, he had watched it spreading across the city with delight, while he continued playing his Cithara, a stringed instrument similar to the ancient Lute and forerunner of the Fiddle / Violin.
Nero quickly sought a scapegoat, as a way of deflecting the blame away from him. He chose the Christians, a newly emerging Cult that had come from the outer Roman provinces and was now spreading the message about a great Messiah that had come to save its believers. He quickly ordered them to be hunted down, persecuting and torturing them and setting them up as a public menace to be excluded and removed from society. His distractions and diversions continued with the public displays of Christians being captured, burned and tortured to make it very clear who the blame should be focused upon. He targeted the most outspoken amongst them, which led to the deaths of the Apostles Peter and Paul who died by his command.
Nero set aside monies for grain and shelter for those that had been disadvantaged in an attempt to appease those who has lost everything as the result of his clandestine operations.
For some time, the population rallied around their Emperor, until more rumours began to emerge of other actions he was taking. His continued desire to divert vast sums of money towards new buildings of marble and stone that would immortalise his great leadership grew unpopular among the elite members of Rome's society and the ruling class of Senators who were opposed to the decadence and frivolous nature of a leader who preferred taking part in performing arts while neglecting his management of overseas provinces leading to many threats of insurrection and civil wars across the empire. Upon being confronted with news of an uprising in Gaul (France), rather than take action, he believed he had the full love and endorsement of his people and instead ignorantly declared - “I have only to appear and sing to have peace once more in Gaul.”
He was declared a Public Enemy by the Senate and his Praetorian Guard abandoned him, naming the Roman General, Galba as their new Emperor. Nero was forced to flee the city and took his own life rather than face public humiliation.
